"There is more of a concern for potential problems then there is for someone who has already proven by demonstrating beyond a doubt their ability to have more dogs than allowed under the current laws and still remain vigilant in their care and consideration for the neighbors.
If a laws exists which would allow more dogs than currently designated, how would that be any different than the expectations placed on someone with two dogs. The number is arbitrary, the care, up keep and training is what anyone should be looking for in a competent dog owner. Someone seeking a variance who has not displayed abilities to care for the dogs should not receive one, but someone how has proven themselves should not be punished by being grouped with and blamed for another failures.
To deny someone based on a possible problem is unfair to those who are responsible and give allowances to those who are not."

Read the below letter sent by the owner of Reno who is being forced to give up a well trained, happy and extremely loved pet because the law says if your neighbors do not want dogs near them, no matter how well trained or cared for the dogs are, you have to give them up.

In the wake of the town board's decision not to issue a variance for the number of dogs I have, I've been preparing for each dog to go to his new home. What should the dog take with him to help settle in? What do the new owners need to know about their training and handling? What do these people need to know about the dogs' individual likes and dislikes? What their souls are like?
One of the dogs leaving is my Reno. Oh my God. Reno.
He needs his semi-deflated basket ball. A bumper of course. A cow femur bone preferably stuffed with peanut butter, but it's fine plain if that's all there is. He'd like a spot on the couch if one's available, but he'd never be rude or pushy about it.
He gives 5 with both paws individually and then "10" with both. After this, he leaps into the air, and then spins one circle and grabs his tail. He's a very mellow dog by nature, and this trick just cracks him up. It's his only one.
He barks three barks to let you know someone's arrived, and then quiets. Other than that, he never makes a noise. His obedience is terrific, on or off leash. His manners are terrific. He has the temperament of an angel. He passed his Canine Good Citizen / Therapy Dog International test as a walk in. He leaves and go lays down when you eat, although he's happy to help you out with the leftovers if invited. He looks sad when you give him a bath or trim his nails, but he always cooperates. Reno always cooperates.
He is wonderful with anyone he meets, human or animal. Any age, any temperament. He used to go to work with me at the assisted living facility. There was an old crotchety man who would only take his meds and come out for meals in exchange for being able to take Reno for a walk and throw a few bumpers for him. The only time I ever saw this man let his guard down or his expression soften was when he was with Reno. He'd been a hunter when he was younger. I guess the dog took him back to better days.
Reno loves to ride in the car. He makes the most wonderful face if you ask him about "The Bird." He likes to "tunnel" through your legs, and stop in position to get scratched above the base of his tail. His back feet march in place as he does this. He likes to be scratched behind the ears, too.
On the day he passed the final series of tests needed for the American Kennel Club to award him the title Companion Dog, he was mounted by another male dog who had gotten up during the exercise known as the three minute down. Not only did Reno not get up from his down, but he looked at me across the ring and wagged his tail as if to say, "See? I am a GOOD boy."
Yes, Reno. You're a VERY good boy.
God help me next Wednesday when he's taken out of here.

Look into this dogs eyes! Read about the depth of love and commitment this owner has given him. This is what owners should be doing. This type of owner should be commended for her dedication, not punished for it!
NO law, being written at this time has the best interest of the dog and owner in mind. On the surface the wording makes them seem like good laws because the true intent and depth of them is not evident beyond the initial sweet wording.
The interest they are serving are the special interest group seeking to remove dog ownership from the face of the earth. Sound unlikely and even unrealistic? It is being done one step at time one law at a time.

HSUS Guardianship -Beware!
While HSUS started out to truly help endangered animals, they are now stepping into the same venue as PETA attempting to take our rights as pet owners away.
The drive to change the name from "Ownership" to "Guardianship" is a legal move to allow organizations such as HSUS and PETA to be able to bring law suits against pet owners in the name of their very own pets. Think of it as a sort of Doggie DYFS. You and your pet no longer have the autonomy to live a free and enjoyable life, now you as an owner must be faced with worrying that anything you say or do with your dog could misinterpreted, disliked, or become part of a grudge outlet. You end up in court, your dog ends up in a shelter and HSUS who has billions of dollars will now use them to build a legal case against you.
Now to make things even worse, the HSUS president is making jokes about proposing that dogs can no longer be called DOGS but rather must be referred to as CANINE AMERICANS. Although this appears to be a joking matter in a speech, in the HOSES mind, they wish dogs to have the same status as any other person living in the United States. Simple, dogs are no longer a different species, they now are equal to and part of the human species.
Will this new title give dogs more access to public buildings and transportation, no it will not. It will however give your neighbor or some stranger on the street the right turn you over to the police for using a leash and collar if said person believes a leash and collar to be abusive.
Will it give you the right to take your dog to state parks and hike free with the dog. No it will not, it will give a look out member of HOSES the right to take your dog away in the name of safety.
Where does all of this leave the dogs.
Their lives will not be better served but potentially get them separated from their families to placed in shelters while owners await trial.
HOSES does not really care about the true welfare of your pets but is more concerned with their own agendas.
Beware of the true meaning and agendas promoted in the Animal Welfare and Animal Rights. These groups are already in schools running programs to indoctrinate your children against you!

Dog Rights
There are legal battles going on each and everyday around the country over the rights of your dog and your rights as a dog owner.
Most people are unaware of these legislative moves being made to limit and reduce rights you have as a dog owner.
What are some of these battles called:
BSL - breed specific legislation. A term coined about the lack of due process to those individuals who own a dog of a particular breed. Presently it is the Pit Bull and any dog which looks like in any fashion, whether its genetics is actual linked to a Pit Bull. These dogs are faced with eradication from the face of the earth, which has actually happened in the city of Denver. The really scary part is the long list of dogs who will be eradicated right behind the Pit Bull such as German Shepherds, Rottwielers and Dobermans. What the list doesn't show you any and all dogs who have ever bitten will and are part of this insidious form of genocide.
Fueled by media, fueled by fear and emotional tactics but more importantly fueled by Animal Rights groups whose main issue is to get rid of all dogs which brings us to the next legal battle.
Spay and Neuter Laws. Many municipalities are building a spay neuter law which will force everyone to eventually spay or neuter their pets. This push is generated by the mis-information of over crowding in shelters by excessive breeding of dogs. In fact many shelters have to transport dogs from other areas of the country to keep their doors open. Fact, over 85% of the dogs in shelters are there due to behavioral and lack of training. Fact, this contrived notion of over crowding is again the brain child of the Animal Rights groups, especially PETA. The end result of this viscous law is this. In about 15 years from the inception of such a law, most all family and companion dogs will be gone from the face of the earth. Again, this is fueled by the Animal Rights groups who have spent may years and the billions of dollars unsuspecting individuals have given them in the name of caring for animals.
Leash and muzzles laws. Everyone is aware of leash laws but what many do not know is where and how leash laws are changing to the detriment of dogs. Soon all dogs will have to be kept in a confined area such as special pen where they cannot ever have any opportunity of getting free, not just in a fenced in yard. They will have to be walked on only a 3 foot leash, be muzzled when in public and never allowed into any area where the public may be present. Where then will you be able to walk your dogs, take those who can to play off leash with other dogs, be able to train your dogs to levels of off leash commands for the benefits of your dogs mental, emotional and physical well being?
Another of the animal Rights doing. Force people to not enjoy having dogs and no dogs will be owned.
These exaggerated laws and media contrived fears are getting way out of hand. In New Mexico the new laws stipulating what size and type cages a dog can be kept in prevents trainers legal from being able to safely and effective house train a dog or do many training tried and true training techniques which will successfully help owners with their dogs/ This law was made by people who have no idea of how to train dogs or what is even safe for a dog. Pit Bull Slaughter in Kansas City
Owners have two weeks to turn their Pit bull dogs over for execution in Kansas City for elimination by the government.
This illegal behavior is unconstitutional, immoral, unethical, inhumane and ineffective in controlling dog bite related problems.
In Denver where the first illegal executions began, 83% of the dogs slaughtered were found to be social and well behaved dogs. The only thing Denver's laws solved was an extinction of a breed.
What breed do you have?
If you have any breed with Bull in the title, a Rottwieler, German Shepard, Akita or Doberman, kiss them good bye. Once all the Pit Bulls are destroyed, the elimination machine will march through your backyard.
Anyone in Kansas who doesn't write their legislator now, is an accomplice to this atrocity.
Anyone living in any other state had better be prepared to act quickly.
What can you do?
Train your dogs to be well behaved and under control at all times. This is every breed and size.
Keep your dogs secure when out in the yard.
Walk them on leashes and have complete leash control when out and about.
If you have a dog who is difficult to control get to an experienced trainer who can and does teach high level distraction training for real life.
Don't think because Pit Bulls are now the focal point your dog won't be next. Every BSL law has a list of other breeds already attached to it, so your dog may already be on the list for the Ultimate Solution, extermination!
If it happens to one it can happen to all!

Dogs Vote
There is much going on behind the scenes that pet owners are not aware of. These activities are slowly taking our rights as dog owners and the rights of dogs to live within our society.
Groups are finally starting to take some action and dog owners are starting to be heard.
Please take a look at this site and decide to step in and step up for our pets and the right to own dogs.
Don't forget in Denver, they came into homes and took dogs away to be destroyed simply because of the breed, good dogs were killed because it fit the description of a law.

A thinking dog
Many people are looking for what will give them a well behaved and calm dog in the house.
There is a simple solution, make your dog think!
What do you need to do to have a thinking dog, anything that will cause them to use brain power.
Rather than just playing fetch, make the dog sit and wait. Hide the toy in an easy to find place. This will allow the dog the think as well as exercise.
Have you ever been to a all day seminar or lecture for work?
At the end of the day you are exhausted but haven't done any more than use your brain.
Brain power causes a chemical change which relax the body.
Now think of a marathon runner. What do they do to increase their ability to run longer distances, they run. Exercising our dogs is very important for their health and happiness. But exercise builds energy. So, walking or running your dog will only physically tire it for short period of time.
Now put thought power into place and you will have a calm dog.
Utilize your commands more frequently. To sit for any length of time requires the dog to focus it's energies into a single command and creates brain power.
A calm dog is a thinking dog, so make your dog think and you will both be happier.

Alfatoxin killing pets
Most likely, you have heard about the tragic situation in the news recently. At least 100 dogs nationwide died as a result of eating contaminated pet food from a well-known pet food company. This company has recalled 19 varieties of dog and cat food in 23 states. The toxin comes from a fungus found on corn and other crops and can cause severe liver damage in pets. Unfortunately, this terrible tragedy has not ended yet … more dogs are showing symptoms of the toxin.This is an extremely difficult time and our hearts go out to the families of those dogs that have died. As you know, our pets are our family and the loss of a dog or cat is just as painful as the loss of a family member.That is why I want to assure you that your pet is not in any danger eating any of our HealthyPetNet foods. Anti-PAWS
There are underlying attempts by individual organization to limit and eventual remove dogs from our lives. These Animal Rights organizations have profited from emotional propaganda to get people to support their industry to the tune of billions of dollars. Now they have the funding and placed their people into the political arena to begin their swipe of dog and animal ownership.

Whereas, S1139, and HR2669, known as the Pet Animal Welfare Act of 2005/2006 (PAWS) have nothing to do with the protection of animals, but are a usurpation of animal ownership, and use rights, and place the federal government into every private property of every animal owner in the United States of America. And whereas, the animal owner citizenry of the United States of America have written letters to our members of Congress voicing our opposition to S1139/HR2669, but have received answers that thank us for our support. And whereas, we who stand in opposition to S1139/HR2669 were not allowed to participate in the public hearings to voice our opposition. And whereas, Wayne Pacelle, of the Humane Society of the US, lied to the Senate Agriculture Committee, testifying that we who stand in opposition to S1139/HR2669 are "dogfighters". Whereas, S1139, and HR2669, known as the Pet Animal Welfare Act of 2005/2006 (PAWS) have nothing to do with the protection of animals, but are a usurpation of animal ownership, and use rights, and place the federal government into every private property of every animal owner in the United States of America. And whereas, the animal owner citizenry of the United States of America have written letters to our members of Congress voicing our opposition to S1139/HR2669, but have received answers that thank us for our support. And whereas, we who stand in opposition to S1139/HR2669 were not allowed to participate in the public hearings to voice our opposition. And whereas, Wayne Pacelle, of the Humane Society of the US, lied to the Senate Agriculture Committee, testifying that we who stand in opposition to S1139/HR2669 are "dogfighters". And Whereas, we the undersigned law abiding citizen animal owners have no option but to post our opposition to S1139/HR2669 to this petition on this public forum. Respectfully we stand firmly in opposition to S1139/HR2669, and further we vow with our signatures to refuse to comply with S1139/HR2669 should Congress pass them into law.

Train them don't blame them!
This is Casey. He weighs about 140 pounds.
You would think a 140 pound dog gets to do what ever he wants!
Not true, Casey is a well trained, well behaved dog who can go with his owners anywhere and be as calm as he appears to be in this picture.
No one gets a dog with the intent of having problems.
Casey's owners were aware that he would grow from a small little bundle into a very big dog, so they trained him.
They trained him to be around other dogs, people and in different environments. They trained him to respond to their commands quickly and effectively.
They trained him to listen and respond no matter where he was or what was going on around him.
He was trained with a balance of reward and correction.

Puppy Training 101
The Christmas puppies are here!
So now what do you do?
It's always exciting to see the look on a child's face when they get that special gift, a puppy!
Here are a few tips on what should be done to make sure you get off on the right paw with your new pup.
A puppy needs about three days to adjust to it's new home. Give it down time to be left alone. Set a rule with your family, if the puppy is in the crate sleeping, leave it alone.
While out of the crate, everyone should not be calling and handling the puppy all at once and in a highly excited manner. Calm is the order of the day. Too much excitement may create a very excitable dog.
There is a two week honeymoon period. During this time the pup is learning and assessing what are the guidelines and who the important people are they must to listen to. After this "Honeymoon" period, you will begin to see what is the natural dog and what truly must be done as far as a training program.
Start to teach the puppy now what you want and expect of it as an adult.
Don't let it jump up, get on furniture, sleep in beds or carry it around all the time.
Certainly start to teach it a name, to sit, follow, and to wear a collar.
Get the pup on a housebreaking schedule and stick to it, adjusting as needed for age development.
Housebreaking is our rule not theirs, so be patient. You are trying to not only teach the dog where to go but also build physical control to hold it for longer periods of time. The rule of thumb is hour to month. So if your puppy is two months, then it should be able to hold for two hours. This varies depending on feeding schedule and play times.
What goes in has to come out and play stimulates the system, so the more active, the more likely to have to go.
A good book is Carol Lee Benjamin "Dog Problems" She outlines a section on housebreaking.
No puppy is too young to start training. At 8 weeks, you can begin to teach many simple commands that will have benefit for you and them as they grow into the teenage years, which begin, at 16 weeks of age.
Get your pup into a training program that also offers socialization. Socialization is more than playing well with others, it also includes helping your puppy develop the necessary skills for becoming a well rounded, and confident adult.

Positive vs. Correction. Where's the balance?
Training needs to bring into balance a dogs desire to work and a dog's need to be responsible for it's own behavior.
Training from one side only or the other creates an imbalance in the dogs responiveness and desire to follow commands or direction.
To use only reward or positive training may give you a dog very happy to work or a dog who works at the verge of being out of control, but not one always willing to respond to commands. They do so only if they feel whatever reward offered at that time is more important than what it they wish to do.
The imbalance is a dog who does not respond 100% of the time, leaving owners with a dog inconsistent in behaviors and a dog never able to go beyond the boundaries of a leash or reward.
If only correction is used in the training, you will have a dog who is able to control their behaviors may do so with little enthusiasm. As a sport of competition dog, they lack luster in their performance and as a family pet be more robotic than playful. A clarification here, correction does not mean nor equate to harsh treatment or abuse. Correction equates to redirection the dogs behavior as it happens, making the dog responsible for choices as opposed to making the owner responsible for the dogs choices, as in reward training.
Yet, both sides of the coin are necessary for the complete dog to exist.
A Balanced trainer is one who uses all aspects of training both reward and correction to have a willing, enthusiastic working partner able to respond to commands in varied circumstances. The best balance dogs are ones who can be in control both on and off leash with varied real life distraction.
This gives you a dog who is able to go and do more, therefore have a better and fuller life as a companion.
If you think of a balanced trainer as a super shopper. One who knows where everything is in the store, how and when to get the best value, along with how to use the store lay out to their best advantage. They can enter the store, get what they need quickly, competely and effectively, then leave the store in a timely manner with a shopping list fully complete. They don't waste time and energy or money picking up and looking at everything, hoping it fits their needs.
A balanced trainer knows how and when to move from reward to correction and back again in their training to get the most efficacious results possible.
